  Heirloom Tomatoes
  Selections Available in Our Stores

Heirloom Tomatoes have a rich and colorful history and are treasured by cooks for their broad range of size, color, shape and taste. To be considered an Heirloom, tomato seeds must be at least 50 years old and have a unique history of its own. The Fresh Market is proud to offer three tasty varieties year round (click variety to find out more):

Selection
For immediate use, look for tomatoes with firm flesh, bright shiny skin and deep, full color. If buying a day or two early, choose fruit with slightly less color indicating that it is not quite ripe.

When choosing Heirloom Tomatoes, color actually helps to tell flavor:  yellow and orange tomatoes are the sweetest with the lowest amount of acid content, green and white tomatoes are more tart because of their high acid and dark red and black tomatoes usually boast a good balance between sweet and tart.

Uses
Chopped, sliced, quartered or stuffed, Heirloom Tomatoes are great as an addition to sandwiches, stews or casseroles, or can simply be eaten by the slice as an appetizer or snack. For best flavor, do no refrigerate.

Nutrition
High in vitamin C, tomatoes are a delicious cholesterol-free and low calorie snack.  Recent studies have shown that eating nine to ten daily servings of fruits and vegetables is an effective method of lowering blood pressure.
